Frequently Asked Questions

Who can I contact with Membership questions?

For general questions related to membership, please contact our Director of Engagement, Kimberly Birbrower, at (818) 758-3800 x 203 or email .

Why is there an additional Security and Maintenance Fee?

Since October 7, we’ve increased our security presence on campus, increases that we anticipate will continue for the foreseeable future. In addition, after 12+ years of continuous use, our beautiful campus has begun to "show its age," and needs ongoing maintenance and repair. This fee will help cover these necessary and ongoing expenses.

Does membership include High Holy Day tickets?

Yes. As a Member in Good Standing*, you and your immediate family (adults and children in your household between the ages of 9-30 years old) are entitled to reserve complimentary general admission High Holy Day tickets good for all Goor Sanctuary services at Temple Judea; however, tickets are not automatically distributed. Tickets must be reserved online in advance of the High Holy Days. An email will be sent to all members when it is time to register. Additional unreserved seats are also available for purchase at that time for extended family and guests of members. Purchase for tickets to Rosh Hashanah at Camp will also be made available at an additional fee on a first come, first served basis. Please note Rosh Hashanah at Camp often sells out early!   *To receive your High Holy Day tickets, you must be a "Member in Good Standing" with no outstanding balances from the previous year.

What is the Temple Judea Pillar program?

Temple Judea Pillars are a self-selected group of members who choose to give $1000 or more above their minimum expected annual membership contribution. Just as physical pillars provide support and ballast to a building, Temple Judea Pillars maintain the strength and longevity of our cherished community. By becoming a Pillar, you'll become part of your local Jewish community’s foundation, assisting fellow community members who genuinely need financial assistance to maintain their membership and ensuring that Jews in the San Fernando Valley have a place to gather and pray in perpetuity. Along with the knowledge that their contribution will have a profound impact, Pillars receive special benefits, including free tickets to Temple events, invitations to private gatherings, and more. Learn More.

What if I am unable to afford full dues?

At Temple Judea, we believe that finances should not be a hurdle to your family’s ability to belong. Synagogue affiliation should not create financial hardship, and we are committed to working with our members who are experiencing financial need. Whatever your circumstances, you belong with us. Let us know if you need help when submitting your new member form or your renewal form and someone from Member Services will be in touch to assist you. If you are applying for need-based tuition assistance, you do NOT need to complete the membership renewal form until you receive your tuition awards letter.

How can I make my annual commitment to renew my Membership?

Renew your annual commitment online anytime by clicking here! In the form you will be able to request to be contacted by a Temple Judea Membership team member.

Is my non-Jewish spouse expected to convert upon joining?

Non-Jewish spouses and other family members are welcomed with open arms at Temple Judea. While non-Jewish family members are welcome to participate in almost every way that a Jew may, there are some roles and responsibilities that can only be performed by members of the Jewish faith. Examples include being a member of the Board of Trustees at the Temple and accepting certain honors during worship services. Conversion to Judaism is a very personal decision and, although we are delighted to support anyone on that journey, it is not a prerequisite to becoming a valued person in our community.

Do you recommend any websites or literature to help our family learn more about Reform Judaism?

The best advice is just to jump right in! For those wishing to explore further reading we would recommend the following resources: www.urj.org The website for the Union for Reform Judaism, which represents Reform Jewish communities throughout North America. www.myjewishlearning.com A non-denominational resource for Jewish learning for all levels of inquiry. www.reformjudaism.org A source for those who are Reform, from a different stream of Judaism, “just Jewish,” interested in conversion, or merely curious to learn more about the customs and traditions that Temple Judea follows.

Will a Rabbi of Temple Judea marry us if we are Interfaith and/or members of the LGBTQIA+ community?

A wedding is one of the most exciting transitions in life and it is a celebration not only for the couple, but also for their families, friends and community. It is the beginning of what we all pray will be a lifetime of loving marriage. Mazel Tov on your momentous decision! If you are planning to get married we encourage you to make an appointment to meet with a member of our clergy as early as possible to find out how we can best help you in your exciting new journey. We are here to support all those who wish to explore building a bayit b’yisrael, a Jewish household. Each couple will be treated with great sensitivity keeping in mind their own individual circumstances and dreams for their future together.

Will my non-Jewish spouse or relative be allowed to participate in our children’s life cycle events?

Absolutely! We regularly invite non-Jewish parents and family members to participate in the life cycle events. After all, non-Jewish parents and relatives are often the key to their children’s participation in this life celebration and it is only fitting for them to be included and recognized for their support for Jewish life. Details of that participation are discussed sensitively and fully with each family and their clergy team.
