Stronger Together: Members Helping Community

    07.03.25 | Stories

As we approach July 4th, we want to highlight a great example of our values in action: the Pathways to Citizenship program, developed within our community and led by longtime members and Pillars, Judy & David Rutt. Pathways has now helped more than 1,600 immigrants become U.S. citizens. It’s a story of justice, compassion, and community action that's rooted in Jewish values and powered by dedicated volunteers, including many from our own congregation.

The idea began in 2017 during a meeting with then-Mayor Eric Garcetti, where the Rutts learned that more than 500,000 Angelenos held green cards but lacked the resources to become citizens. After a year of research and training, Pathways to Citizenship was born: a free, three-part program offering eligibility screening, legal assistance, and citizenship classes. What makes this program truly special is that it never charges for legal review, instruction, or materials - making citizenship genuinely accessible.

Temple Judea is honored to be a leader in this program - grown by strong partnerships with local churches, other nonprofit organizations, and a committed network of pro bono attorneys, bilingual teachers, mentors, and curriculum writers. Together, this collaborative effort creates safe, welcoming spaces where the dream of citizenship and belonging can become a reality - an effort that may be more crucial now than ever.
