Have you ever wondered what makes music Jewish? From the joyful melodies of Kabbalat Shabbat to the moving sounds of the High Holy Days, every tune we sing in the synagogue carries meaning, history, and heart. But how do we choose which melodies belong in our services, and which might feel out of place? Is music considered Jewish because of the meaning behind it or does a piece of music written by a Jewish person make it so? And did you know that many of the most famous Christmas songs in the world are written by Jewish songwriters...would that make these songs Jewish?!
On Friday, November 14 at 7:45 pm, join us for a special evening of discovery, reflection, and music as we explore the sounds that shape our spiritual lives. Bring your favorite (and maybe your least favorite!) pieces of Jewish music to share as we discuss what makes them meaningful—or challenging—to us. Together, we’ll listen, learn, and celebrate the richness of our ever-evolving musical heritage.
Led by Rabbi Cantor Wissot, with performances by our CITs (Cantors-in-Training) and Choir, this intimate dinner and presentation will be both enlightening and deeply personal. Come ready to enjoy good food, good company, and the beautiful melodies that continue to inspire and unite our community.
